Artist In Residence
Mount Gnomon

In the middle of 2020: a year that saw serious disturbances to their business Mount Gnomon Farm called for expressions of interest in an Artist In Residence opportunity at the farm using the new barn as a base and offering up their unique location as inspiration and refuge to a local creative. The program was developed in conjunction with an experienced arts administrator and aspires to: 'increase the creative license of the farm and to develop more links with the community.'
My first visit to Mount Gnomon Farm was back in 2011 when I was working as a newspaper photographer, I was immediately impressed with the innovation and asperations of the owners and the fascinating location. I've observed the business evolve over the last decade and felt the Artist in Residence opportunity could offer me some space to experiment with some new techniques and ideas. Receiving notification in September that I was invited to undertake the Artist in Residence position was great. Over the spring and summer I visited the farm, watching the seasons change rapidly and practicing my video capture skills. My aim was to develop a series of short looping video clips that reflect my experience of the Farm and surrounding undeveloped bushlands of the Dial Range, with the aim of projecting them on to and around the new barn at the conclusion of my residency. Visiting the farm with it's orchard, garden and animals on a weekly basis though the spring and summer was a excellent experience. The light and abundant growth energy was stimulating for my creative and technical practices, offering a new set of stimulus on every visit. Mount Gnomon Farm has a unique and vibrant presence in the landscape, it's cultivated by the owner Guy Robinson his passion for the place is contagious.

These short clips are made from my first encounters with the farm, the landscape, the animals and seasons. They are also camera handling exercises, learning t use a camera to capture moving images rather than stills and developing a style for myself. Post production experiments will follow.
